Charlotte pulled the blankets around her as tightly as she could and curled into a ball, fighting to stay asleep as long as possible. She was having a wonderful dream. A dream that involved soft sheets and a king-sized bed, and Easton’s mouth on every inch of her. But the bitter, seductive scent of coffee dragged her up into consciousness.

There was a steaming mug waiting for her on the coffee table in front of the couch. Charlotte pushed her hair out of her face, her brain still a little fuzzy from sleep, trying to force her bleary eyes to focus. She picked up the coffee, took a sip. It was hot and fresh, with just enough cream to cut the bitterness. Easton, she thought. He’d noticed, without her saying anything, how she liked it. He noticed a lot of things, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. It was nice, but she just wasn’t used to people noticing her.

Easton was out on the terrace, a mug of his own on the table in front of him as he texted. Charlotte stepped out, careful not to spill her coffee. “Good morning. Thank you for this,” she said, gesturing with the mug.

“You’re welcome.” Easton glanced at her quickly and then focused on his phone. “It’s Ken,” he told her as she settled in the chair next to him. “He and Holly did some digging on Carl the photographer. He says Holly wants to dig some more, but so far it seems like our friend Carl is exactly who he says he is. Just a guy from Jersey who won a vacation.”

“That’s good news, right?” Charlotte said, sipping her coffee.

Easton set down his phone. “Yes.”

But she knew that tone in his voice; he wasn’t satisfied. She wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about that either. That she was starting to recognize the different shades of his voice. When they’d first met, she’d thought he was totally closed off, unreadable. Had he opened up, gotten more expressive? Or had she gotten better at reading him?

Or maybe it was neither—maybe she was just fooling herself, thinking she understood him better than she really did.

Charlotte cradled the mug between her hands, soaking in the warmth for a second. “You don’t look like that’s good news.”

Easton shook his head. “I just had a gut feeling about him. Still do. But he checks out.”

“Okay. So he’s not here for me. That doesn’t mean you’re wrong to believe there’s something shady about him.” Impulsively, Charlotte reached out and took his hand. “He could still be a bad guy. I’m sure he steals from widows and orphans. Smacks gum at the movie theater. Kicks puppies as he crosses the street?”

Easton looked down at their joined hands for a long moment. “I feel like I owe you an apology. I don’t think I’ve been doing a good job so far. I’m supposed to be keeping you hidden and protected, but I’ve been off my game. Paranoid and short-sighted. I’ve almost blown our cover who knows how many times.
